Fibrous Plastering

This is a 5 DAY course and can be done in the week or on weekends

Internal Plastering also known as hanging and stopping. This trade consists of attaching Drywall to stud partions and then using a cement compound over paper tape to fill the joints. The finished product is a flat wall that can then be painted.

This system was invented in the 1960s in America. It was introduced due to the weight restrictions of building high rise buildings known at the time and still called to this day 'Skyscrapers'. The main advantage at the time was that it weighed a lot less than bricks and mortar, this meant that it was possible to build buildings ever higher. A trend that still continues today.

This form of building does have some advantages over traditional bricks and mortar walls, other than just being light weight. It is quick to assemble, walls that would take weeks if made of brick can be erected in days. It is also reasonable easy to remove, a feature that has become increasingly useful in high rise buildings that are continually traded form one business to another and regularly have interior floors redesigned. With the introduction in the last decade of new type's of plasterboard ( water resistant, fire resistant, sound resistant ) the walls can now be built to a similar standard as brick walls. Although a decision on what the wall is to be used for has to be made in advance. Each board can only do one particular job not all three.

The jointing compounds used are all types of cement that come in powder form and when mixed with water produce a chemical reaction that begins to harden the mixture. this process can be timed relatively accurately and when buying the material there is normally a choice of 45 minute setting times, 60 minute setting time or 90 minute setting time, the different times used is down to personal choice or some times job necessity.

This trade from the outside can look easy to do. It is in fact much more difficult than it at first appears. But with our experienced and enthusiastic tutors we will have you hanging and stopping like a professional in no time.
